FAQ's

What is Argentium sterling silver?

From our suppliers website "Made with a touch of germanium, Argentium® Silver presents a bright white color that is closer to fine silver than traditional sterling, yet is highly resistant to firescale and extremely slow to tarnish under most conditions. With 93.5% pure silver, Argentium meets the legal standard to be quality-marked as sterling silver. All Argentium is made from reclaimed silver and its sources are guaranteed by Argentium International Ltd. The unique properties of Argentium make this metal a dream to work with. It welds flawlessly and is ideal for fusing techniques. It offers excellent formability in its soft state and will work harden beautifully to create jewelry pieces that are stronger. It can also be age-hardened to make it more durable, able to take a brighter, more long lasting shine. Jewelry-makers and their customers appreciate the value and convenience of a brighter-white sterling silver that resists tarnish, everyday scratches and dents, and keeps on shining."

What is gold filled?

From our suppliers website: "Gold-filled, or gold overlay, is made by heat- and pressure-bonding a thin layer of karat gold to a brass (or other base metal) core. The "14/20" or "12/10" notation refers to the industry shorthand describing the resulting material. The first number is the karat purity of the gold used; the second number is the amount, by weight, of gold to the substrate material. "14/20" gold-filled material is made with 14-karat gold and the gold represents 1/20th (or 5%) of the total weight of the material." Also, "Karat gold covers the brass surface, making it tarnish-resistant" and "the value of gold-filled is greater than gold-plated because gold-filled has an actual layer of karat gold, not just a microscopic film."

What is Titanium?

What are the different gauges used and what does that mean?

Each listing includes information regarding the gauge, or thickness, of the earrings. The larger the number, the thinner the wire is. Most commonly, I use 19 gauge wire which is sturdy but still comfortable in a standard ear piercing. 20 gauge is used for all multiple hoop designs and is the most common gauge for commercial earrings. I also have 21 gauge earrings available. 21 gauge is lightweight and I typically use it for smaller designs since it's not as strong as the thicker wire.

19 gauge = .036"
20 gauge = .032"
21 gauge = .028"

Occasionally, you will see the term "gauged earrings". This refers to a thickness that is larger than a standard ear piercing. If you have gauged piercings, you will probably know what to look for.
